• As of August 2023, the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) experienced no "lost time" work accidents.
• The WWTP received all "A-level" ratings in the 2022 Compliance Maintenance Annual Report (CMAR).
• Plant staff collaboratively assisted Strand Engineering with facility upgrades planning. This included identifying failing equipment and processes, identifying both power supplies and wiring to equipment, reviewing plans, discussing operational procedures, and meetings.
• The WWTP successfully completed the bid process for the Wastewater Upgrades project (all parties assisted) and are now waiting for upgrades to begin.
• Completed Lift Station Number 2 overflow structure to comply with Department of Natural Resources (DNR) requirements to substantially reduce the potential of a sewer overflow.
• Installed full scale odor control system at the WWTP in response to increased fish waste being received at the plant.
• Staff replaced the Polymer Make Down Unit for Aerobic Sludge Thickening.
• Completed conduit replacement project at Lift Station Number 4.
• The WWTP installed a Chem Scan Phosphorus analyzer which lowered Ferrous Chloride consumption by 15 to 20 percent, saving nearly $9,000 annually.

   

• Switched to a less costly polymer on both aerobic and anaerobic thickeners.
• Secured more local land for our sludge application.
• Completed five additional WWTP and lift station Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s).
• Completing installation of weir covers by November 2023. This creates a cleaner discharge to Lake Michigan and lowers the amount of time needed for clarifier and UV maintenance.

• Maintain a safe working environment, striving for no "lost time" work accidents.
• Provide support to the engineering firm and primary contractor during the completion of the plant upgrades projects.
• Oversee the installation of weir covers.
• Complete South Spring Street to South Park Street sewer replacement design.
• Continue additional safety and professional wastewater training.
• Continue to log information from Smart Cover and other covers as needed to pinpoint problem areas.
• Complete an additional 10 departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s).
• Complete painting of sludge tanks.
• Uncover more opportunities for inflow and integration reduction.
• Maintain all "A-level" ratings in the Compliance Maintenance Annual Report (CMAR).
• Help keep Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) project upgrades remain on track and moving forward from an operations perspective.
• Replace Anaerobic Sludge Polymer Make Down Unit.

• The City and its contractor have worked out an alternative method of cleaning/inspecting the anaerobic digesters. Therefore, the parking lot outside of the WWTP gates will remain open during the summer other than when some sandblasting and painting in the vicinity occurs. We will post notices when the sandblasting and painting is scheduled.
