• Remodeled the wood shop which included painting the room, new epoxy floor covering, new hose reels, new electrical reels, and removal of an inoperable outdoor dust collector. Installation of a new dust collection system and new 240-volt outlets, both of which were necessary for proper operation of a newly installed planer and jointer, were also completed. This space is now a properly dedicated wood shop, containing the necessary tools, equipment, and safety measures needed to support and complete a wide variety of city projects.
• Reorganized the mechanics shop which included a thorough review of all old vehicle and equipment manuals. The mechanics office now contains two whiteboards listing all equipment and vehicles with the correct fluid levels for quick and easy reference for the crew members. The oil room was emptied and thoroughly cleaned. New pallet racking was installed to help organize and make all fluids, grease, and supplies easily accessible, safe, and clearly labeled. All outdated or obsolete tools and parts were reviewed and either sold or scrapped.
• The Streets Division cleared roughly 350 years of material at the north beach from the bluff slide, giving residents and visitors safe access to the north beach again.
• Removed approximately 250 cubic yards of dredged sand immediately north of Pier 5 from the dredging project which was requested by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
• The Streets Division crack-filled five miles of city streets.
• The Streets Division mastic-filled all potholes in Grand Avenue, North Wisconsin Street, and South Spring Street, in addition to ramping numerous raised manholes around the city.
• The Streets Division, in conjunction with the Parks Division, replaced the library retaining wall.
• Milled deteriorating street segments, placing approximately 650 tons of asphalt on city streets. Combined with the crack filling, these asphalt repairs will extend the life of the roads by preventing water from penetrating the surface.
• Repainted all parking stalls, stencils, crosswalks, center lines, fog lines, and stop bars on the arterial and collector streets, and repainted crosswalks on 50 percent of the side streets. All fog lines and center lines were contracted to the Ozaukee County Highway Department, which has the equipment to perform the job in a safer, and more efficient manner.
• Completed cleaning one-third of the sanitary sewer mains, meeting the sewer utility’s goal listed in the approved Compliance Maintenance Annual Report (CMAR).
• Cleaned 200 catch basins, removing 35 tons of debris with its new Elgin Street Sweeper. This initiative maintains compliance with the city’s Municipal Separate Stormwater Permit (MS4).
• Removed 153 tons of street sweepings from city streets. This initiative maintains compliance with the city’s MS4 stormwater permit.
• The sign shop constructed and installed 53 new street name signs and 170 traffic signs.

• The Streets Division will crack-fill five miles of streets. –Crack-filling is the most vital and cost-effective way to help preserve our roads and increase their life expectancy. Filling cracks in pavement helps seal the road, not allowing water into the subbase or allowing water to freeze and thaw in the cracks, causing the pavement to deteriorate.
• Grind and asphalt 500 tons of asphalt on city streets. – Grinding and asphalting is part of the division’s road maintenance program. The division focuses on roads that are on the second cycle of crack filling and have areas with needs beyond crack filling. This, combined with crack filling, essentially reseals the entire road. The division then focuses on areas that are potholed or are falling apart to try to improve the quality of the road until it is reconstructed.
• Clean one-third of the city’s sanitary sewers. – This process is required by the DNR and tracked through our Geographic Information System (GIS). This process helps prevent sewer backups and maintain Compliance Maintenance Annual Report (CMAR) requirements for the Wastewater Treatment Plant.

City of Port Washington-Street Department Yard – 333 N. Moore Rd.

The Street Yard opens on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, and closes on Saturday, December 7, 2024.  Days/hours are:

• Tuesdays-3:00 pm to 6:00 pm
• Thursdays-3:00 pm to 6:00 pm
• Saturdays-10:00 am to 4:00 pm

The Street Yard accepts grass clippings, leaves, dead plants, weeds, etc. Please call 262-284-2600 or see the FAQ’s for more information.  The Street Dept Yard is open to City of Port Washington residents only.  Proof of residency is required.

Brush Collection:

Brush collection is made bi-weekly from the week of April 22, 2024 through the week of May 20, 2024, weekly from June 3, 2024 through the week of August 19, 2024 and bi-weekly from the week of September 3, 2024 through the week of September 30,2024. All brush must be at the curb by Monday at 7:00 am. Only one trip will make citywide, whether it takes 1 day or 5 days.

The Street Crew will no longer pick up brush from dead end alleys.  All other alleys will only be picked up by request by calling City Hall at 262-284-2600.

Brush will be accepted at the Street Yard from October 5, 2024 to December 7, 2024.

Note:  Brush collection is intended for tree branches or removal of small bushes but not for removal of large trees or lot clearing.

Brush shall consist of all “woody” material, maximum 8-inch diameter.  Brush should be placed in the parkway for pickup or in the front yard along the sidewalk if parkway is too small.  It is important to properly stack brush with butt ends facing in the direction of traffic.  Please separate logs and brush.  If possible, stack brush in smaller individual piles that will better allow for crews to carry it to the chipper.  Also, if you have smaller piles that could be put into containers such as small boxes, or plastic tubs, it would be appreciated to make the process more efficient. 

There is absolutely no placing of brush in the road. For those residents who have smaller terraces or no terraces at all, please place brush in your front yard parallel to the sidewalk.    Also, if you have a contractor remove a tree, direct the contractor to take or chip the branches.

Leaf Collection

Leaves may be raked into the street from October 1, 2024 – November 24, 2024, weather permitting.  Leaves can be bagged and taken to the Street Yard until December 7, 2024.

Holiday Decorations and Christmas Trees:

Wreaths and garland are considered refuse and are to be placed in the refuse cart.  Christmas trees will be collected curbside by the DPW several times in the month of January.  Do Not Leave the tree stands, light strings, ornaments, and/or tree bags on the trees.
